Innovative products that are focused on healthy and active ageing can improve public health prevention programs and lead to better therapies for patients. The better these products align with end-user demands, the greater their societal and economic impact. While larger companies can perform their own wide-ranging market analyses, for SMEs it is far more difficult to acquire valid information on their end-user’s needs. The Population Intelligence Lab program has identified the great potential of data and biomaterials from large population- and patient-based biobanks for innovative product development. Pointlab collects and makes accessible tools and procedures needed to promote interactions between SMEs and biobanks. Stimulating product development and enhance the societal and economic impact of biobanks and custodians of other large population datasets.
In 2018 two separate Business support Hubs will be established in the cities of Groningen (Netherlands) and Tartu (Estonia), two of Europe's biobanking
& population data hotspots. The Hubs will broker between biobank / population data custodians, and corporate entities with a
commercial interest in the custodian's facilities. The Hub clusters know-how on rules and regulations on one side (privacy & consent) and opportunities
for commercialization strategies on the other.
Following the Academia Industry Meetup (AIMday) methodology, developed by Uppsala University, two meet ups will be organized in Tartu and Groningen focusing on public private partnerships in biobanking and population health data.
In 2018 the Pointlab program will launch two business plan competitions. This will be done together with regional biobank and population data custodians. We will challenge entrepreneurs to propose a plan on how access to data and/or (biological) materials can help their product development. Separate calls will be launched that follow up on the scheduled AIM-days in Tartu and Groningen.
Population Intelligence Lab started its activities in 2017 after receiving support from the EIT Health.
Pointlab is positioned in the VALIDATE! activity line of EIT Health's Accelerator; a business creation programme, set up to support the best and brightest health industry entrepreneurs. To tackle the future challenges of European healthcare, EIT Health Accelerator creates a favourable environment for innovation, providing skills and services to get promising business ideas into the market. The VALIDATE! activity line places emphasis on validating products and services. The network of Living Labs and Test Beds provides entrepreneurs the means to test products throughout the value chain. Other activities allow entrepreneurs to gain understanding in local/regional regulatory and reimbursement schemes and have access to market experts.
